Four Lions

Literally one of the funniest movies I've seen in the past few months. I would recommend it to almost anyone. Though its topic, Islamic jiihads, doesn't seem humorous, the way the film is presented is genius. This satire perfectly attacks the ridiculous nature of suicide bombers and racist society in general.

It just seems so wrong to be laughing while people are being blown up, but when those people are tripping over sheep while carrying explosives, you'll come to understand that there's a level of forgiveness in the theater. The great thing about this humor is that it's not based on farts or sex, but its core lies in the foundations of a current problem. It's definitely one I could watch over and over again.

When Scenes:
WHEN
Fessel buys all of his liquid peroxide at the same store and tries to validate it by having used different voices...the voices are all the same.
WHEN in the same scene Fessel claims he disguised himself as a woman by covering up his beard with his hand.
WHEN Hassan freaks out in the lecture on Islam and pretends to blow himself up. When confetti pops out he yells at the people that they just thought he would blow up because he's Muslim.
WHEN Barry isn't invited to Pakistan and they frog tie him in the trunk.
WHEN Omar shoots the rocket launcher backwards and accidently blows up the training camp instead of the American spy plane.
WHEN the "four lions" dress up in costumes to run in the London Marathon.

QUICKIES
"I think I'm confused, but I'm not sure." Kayvan Novak (Waj)

"[When using 'fake' voices to buy liquid peroxide] I.R.A. voice? Their terrorists Fess! Why d'you wanna do a terrorist voice for? You'll get us nicked!" Nigel Lindsay (Barry)
"But I'll be disguished then, won't I?" Adeel Akhtar (Fessel)
"Yeah, as a terrorist!" Nigel Lindsay (Barry)

"[same scene] So you went into a shop...with your hands on your face, like that, and asked for 12 bottles of bleach? So why has she got her hands on her face, Fess?" Nigel Lindsay (Barry)
"Cos she's got a beard..." Adeel Akhtar (Fessel)

"[Waj's idea of heaven] Rubber dinghy rapids bro." Kayvan Novak (Waj)

Fun Facts

On January 23, 2010, Four Lions had its world premeir at Sundance. On the same day, the UK terror threat level was raised to severe, due to non-specific chatter.

The Legend of Leigh Bowery

I recently finished watching a marvelous documentary called "The Legend of Leigh Bowery". For those of you outside the know, Leigh Bowery was an Australian fashion designer and artist who made a name for himself in the London art/fashion/nightlife scene of the 1980s.

I was absolutely taken by this man's ability to transform his own life into performance art by wearing the most outlandish costumes possible. His propensity for sequins, ruffles, bright colours and overall extravagant appearances is endlessly inspiring.

A big part of the film was Leigh Bowery's collaboration with the dancer Michael Clark, designing costumes for his choreography. I spent waaaay to much time staring at Michael Clark videos after this, because weird costumes and dancing set to music by The Fall is just a winning combination. These videos will change your life (if you are me).

Most of the documentary featured Leigh's friends discussing his life, and the most honest part was when somebody noted that "he was a fashion designer, but he really didn't want anyone else wearing his clothes". That doesn't sound particularly lucrative but his originality was certainly unparalleled.

Victimhood

The other day I saw a girl wearing THE coolest dress. It had fancy criss-cross back detail and it took me a minute to realize that 'hey, that dress is from American Apparel!" So, I promptly exchanged a dress I wasn't quite warming up to for this navy blue bandeau pencil dress! I am copying the style of a complete stranger, but let's just pretend that's not weird.

Guest Blog: For the Love of a Child

Hey, everybody!! I'm popping in real quick as we crest the peak of the Loch Ness Monster here to bring on the guest post. You met her yesterday and she's back to entertain you with a story about "Love" and "expectations". Please welcome back Brittainy from Litany of Brittainy...

Love Is Kitty Tails

Love, to my four year old, is three identical pink kitties with beans in their bellies. The one with the two blue sharpie dots on the tag is her favorite, and she knows him by smell. For her, love is kitty tails rubbed across the nose while she drifts off to sleep. Blue Kitty has been her companion since infancy, and she has never left the house without him. Mackenzie and Kitty. Kitty and Mackenzie. Never one without the other. No matter how dirty or faded that bag of beans gets, its hers. Its unconditional.

My two year old has never had a favorite thing. Never sucked his thumb, never wanted a pacifier, (much to my exhausted dismay). He doesn't drag behind him a ragged blanket, doesn't need a special stuffed thing to lull him to sleep. There isn't some irreplaceable thing we worry about losing at the zoo. For him it is me. Whether I'm dressed and accessorized, or in a comfy pair of sweats, its me. Whether I'm happy, sad, or frustrated, its me. That boy doesn't care if I'm a brain surgeon or a hot dog vendor. It matters not about my politics, opinions, or housekeeping skills. Nothing makes a difference at all. Its unconditional.

I don't think I've ever known another love like kid love. Adults are responsible in the way they love. There are motives, repercussions, paper work. For the grown folk there are in-laws, traditions, and stigmas. They love with reason and expect too much. Their love is misguided with their pocketbooks, or their bodies, and not enough with their hearts.

No love is more pure than the love of small children. There are no rules, no boundaries. No expectations to measure up to, be let down by. For the small ones there aren't assumptions, or predictions. No standards to live up too. No room for disappointment. For the littles, love just is.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone. I'll be back on Tuesday to tell you all about my hop around Europe. Please leave lots of love for Brittainy and run on over to her blog. You won't be disappointed.

Catasrophe Girl: The Luckiest Girl In Town

Something bad happened.

Common catch phrase. The response I get is typically: "What now?" Then,"That would only happen to you. Just your luck."

I was the kid who always got hurt in gym class. You know the one who trips over Justin S. while playing kickball, and manages to knock Corey T. down like a bowling pin during the smash and slide? Me.

Remember that one kid who was caught stealing third base, and sprinted back to recover second, but tripped over her own feet, sending her sailing like a cartoon, head-first into the cement gymnasium wall? Yeah, that was me too.

Do you recall The Great Balance Beam Incident, where Her Gracefulness teetered awkwardly on the balance beam before loosing her footing, slamming her hoo-haw into the beam, turning upside down, falling on her head, and losing consciousness? Not awesome.

Ask me how I know.

But the worst thing about being that kid, was broken glasses. Countless pairs of broken glasses in my middle school years. Sitting accidents, soccer balls in the face. When I was nine, and got hit by a car at my friend's birthday party, my first thought was did I break my glasses? Once, somebody's dog ate them. The dog's name was Dank.

Last year was The Lens Catastrophe Of 2009. That was the day I broke every vision related thing I owned. First I let the strap of my brand new SLR hang irresistibly over the kitchen table in the vicinity of my son. He pulled it to the floor, where it grimaced and shattered. My memory will bear the scars of that moment forever.

As luck would have it, later that day my eye suddenly started hurting, and the bottom lid swelled painfully. I was walking toward the bathroom to inspect it in the mirror when my glasses exploded and fell off my face. Unprovoked. I swear to you, they broke in half, right through the middle of the bridge, so later when I tried to tape them back together it would be impossible. Glue didn't work either. Internets, when I don't have my glasses its not just an inconvenience, its a handicap. I will not recognize you sitting 3 feet in front of me. So the huz went to CVS to pick up some mighty putty. You know, that stuff that will hold you to the outside of a moving train? That stuff fixed my glasses temporarily. That stuff smells like a wet dog who has been sprayed by a skunk and rolled in manure. But resting on your nose all day. Also, not awesome.

The next day my seeing eye friend came to drive me to Lens Crafters, and lo and behold. Something wrong with her windshield wipers. When it randomly started pouring. And she couldn't see a thing.

My luck.

But was it lucky, or unlucky?

When I was four or five years old I nearly drowned. I was at a pond, and while walking around in the water I wandered right into an underwater drop-off. I remember falling to the bottom and pushing off with my feet, gulping a big breath of air when my face broke the water, and gliding back down. Pushing off, gliding down. Rinse and repeat. After 5 or 6 underwater jumps to the surface, I stopped pushing off, and resigned to going under. On that final glide to the pond bottom I felt like a feather being carried off at the discretion of the wind. I opened my eyes and saw the disturbed sand billowing, the muted, rocky pond floor, and the minnows. That's the last thing I remember.

My aunts told me later that they weren't paying attention. That they were talking amongst themselves and suddenly realized there was chaos. People screaming and running into the water. Something about a drowning kid. There was a period of confusion before they realized it was me. Somebody pulled me out of the water and saved my life. I was going to drown and then I wasn't.

Was I lucky or unlucky?

When all is said and done, in retrospect, I'm unscathed. My kids are healthy, my husband comes home every night. I own a home, a dog. I have the typical American family, (consisting of totally atypical people, but nonetheless), and though money is tight, we are not starving to death. I have a handful of quality friends. Things suck sometimes, but I would still say I'm pretty lucky. Sometimes I would say I'm the luckiest girl in town.

And I'm going on a mini vacation for the weekend, but I hope that you will stop by and check out the Litany of Brittainy, have a good laugh, share a good story or two. She'll be back tomorrow to guest post.
Happy Friday!!

Last Week's Fact or Fiction:
1. I was voted Most Likely to Succeed as a HS Senior.
False. I was unpopular in school and didn't get voted as anything. Thanks to Facebook, they can see me now too. Hahahahahaha. Not sure if that works in my favor or not. Ha.
2. My husbands birthdays are 2 years and a day apart.
True. They are both born in March, one on the 16th in 1968, the other on the 17th in 1970.
3. I have dated 5 men with the same first name. I married 2 of them.
True. It is the most common male name in the United States, and while they didn't all always go by the proper name, they still had it. Husband #1's official first name was generally used as a nickname, but for him it was his actual first name. GC doesn't use a nickname at all.

Ugly Boots

Today I dressed like a post-punk zebra - Joy Division shirt and striped bike shorts. It pretty much looked like I wasn't wearing pants the whole day, but "decency" isn't really an important word in my vocabulary. Also, thanks to Anna who has excellent timing! She sent me this rad watercolour painting postcard of me wearing my Joy Division shirt that reads "Hipster Musings frowns upon your ugly boots." TOO FUNNY, YOU GUYS!
