You Made Me Realise

I have no idea what is so compelling about this baggy, striped crop top but that doesn't stop me from wearing it all the bloody time. It's the perfect length to wear with high-waisted pants and adds a dash of 90s to the most seemingly benign outfits. The disco pants are shiny, and that's all the reason I need to be wearing them.

Also, I finally caved and set myself up with a Tumblr blog. Someone stole the domain name 'hipstermusings.tumblr.com' for the SECOND time now and I just need to clear the air so that there is no blog-confusion on whether it belongs to me. I will be uploading my own hipster musings at 'isabelmusings.tumblr.com' so don't fall prey to imposters!

Tax Dollars

So the day before I left for my NYC trip, I had the opportunity to chill with the wicked Winnipeg-er Kylie of Nice and Shiny in Toronto! I like groping shiny things and making funny facial expressions too, so it should be pretty obvious that we had quite a bit in common and got along famously!

Kylie took a whole bunch of amazing pics of our vintage-hunting excursion that you can see on her blog. She also was gracious enough to take my outfit photo with her totally professional camera. Thanks so much Kylie, it truly takes a fellow fashion blogger to understand!

We both ended up buying a pair of matching petticoat shorts at a costume shop in Kensington Market. Insane awesome how we're on the same brainwave like that.

You know what else is insanely awesome? The costume that Kylie wore to the Lady Gaga concert in Toronto. This is duct tape madness at its finest! She should get sponsored by a hardware store just for that.

I do not think that I am alone when I say that I have a lot of clothes. It’s okay, I can admit to it but I’m not joining Shopaholics Anonymous any time soon. I DON’T HAVE A PROBLEM, I CAN STOP ANY TIME. As much as I would love to hang on to every single piece of clothing I have ever bought, limited closet space has successfully kept me from becoming one of those creepy compulsive hoarders you see on the Oprah Show. Due to the miracles of the internet fashion blogging community, when I no longer love a piece of clothing I can almost immediately think of someone who would appreciate it and look way more fierce in it than I ever would. Though sometimes I like to yammer on about how my style is affected by a severe case of multiple personality disorder, there are common elements that tie my ‘looks’ together. Sequins, Doc Martens and weird sweaters are all things that I wear on a fairly regular basis and it looks like a few of these have managed to catch on to the general population (of fashion bloggers, that is). I’d just like to give a special mention to some super cute bloggers who have created outfits that were partially inspired by my weirdo style.

Doree will teach trend reporting and History or whatever she has a masters in. We will all come together to do a mega advanced class on the ’90s. Obviously."

She's totally working it in the tie dye jeans, Comme des Garcons skirt and silver brogues. It's a pretty 'avant garde' combination of pieces, but it just looks so damn good. You WIN, Jane!

Can we just stop for a moment and appreciate the vintage adorable-ness and general awesomeness that characterize Francesca from the snail and the cyclops and Siri from Ringo, Have a banana?


I'm not one of those girls who likes to wear pretty things all the time and looks like they walked straight out of Lula magazine, but I can appreciate the look and nobody does it better than these two.

Imagine doing just what the big bang did.

I already happen to think that Mary is a marvelous, spectacular human bean but my love for her swelled (like one of those "just add water" dinosaurs you get at the dollar store) when I received a clothing swap package from her in the mail! There is so much beauty in here, it's almost too good. Pucci print, buffalo plaid and DISCO SEQUINZ? I'm almost ready to pee myself.

We met up for some serious shopping time in grand old Toronto. Let me tell you, no one ransacks the vintage racks of Kensington like two fashion bloggers in heat! (It was actually really hot yesterday.) Check out that crazy sparkly cocoon that I completely regret not buying.

Let's just say we bonded like crazy (crazy lesbian vampires?), and nobody else will ever understand the story behind our new saying "The East Coast: It's midget porn".

I am the happiest woman alive, not an understatement.

When Elizabeth told me she had a little surprise coming for me in the mail, I just knew it was going to be amazing (after all she does have the best taste ever). But when my unworthy little fingers opened the package and pulled out THIS, I was amazed.

Nirvana 'Come As You Are' t-shirt: 1992. Yer killin' me, woman! Of course I would've been doing this psychedelic mess a disservice to NOT pair it with my purple Doc Martens.

Elizabeth - you are a true original gangsta and I would do anything to repay you for your unexpected (yet genuinely appreciated) generosity.

Rainbow Project

I know mentioned I had an exciting project to share this weekend, so here it is! Basically, I was poking around Garbage Dress during the week (best. blog. ever.) and discovered this piece of art Zana did called "The Spectrum of All of My Clothes", which I think is amazing and appeals to me on so many different levels.

So I got kind of inspired and decided to do my own copycat take on it, which just means photographing myself in monochromatic outfits. It was a really fun project (only took about 20 minutes) and I learned quite a bit about my wardrobe. For example, it was easy to put together the black, grey and white outfits but significantly harder for the purple and blue. I couldn't even manage to put together pink, yellow or green outfits. So without further ado...

Rocking the red! Featuring an H&M hair bow, vintage tee, H&M pants.

Clad in black (I really should have tried harder with this one.) Featuring a thrifted dress, ripped tights, thrifted oxfords.

Dressed in blue. This is so "Balmain" I can taste it. Featuring a thrifted shirt, jacket and DIY pants.

Swathed in grey (Apparently 40% of my wardrobe is different shades of grey.) Featuring a sweater from Tavi, Old Navy dress, American Apparel tri-blend leggings, thrifted shoes.

Wrapped in white. Featuring an Old Navy tunic, thrifted newpaper skirt, Joe Fresh tights and thrifted shoes.

Can't think of another verb other than "wearing" purple. Featuring a thrifted dress and Doc Martens.
