Have It Your Way...or so they say

Never my way.......I usually do Supah's PINT, and another great new meme started by Kristi over at Live and Love Out Loud, but I'm having a bit of blogger's block. It's not that I need material, it's just putting it together.  I think what I really need is a bottle of the hard stuff glass of w(h)ine, and a quiet moment to reflect...

I have a bad habit of going through a drive through instead of slapping something quick together when we have a late night out. Me being the picky eater that I am, always, ALWAYS has to have it made to order. It doesn't matter where we go, I will decide that I just must have something that has to have stuff left off. Every.Freaking.Time. No matter which fast food joint I choose.

This is coming back to bite me in the butt. They must be on to me. Even when I switch vehicles, they still can't seem to ever get it right. I've even blamed it on GC for screwing it up and not telling them. But, I'm really beginning to believe it must be me. Taco Bell leaves the fiesta sauce on. McDonalds removes my bacon and puts the wilted wrong lettuce on. Burger King leaves the tomatoes on, and Hardees never takes off the ketchup, mustard and pickles.

Seriously, what is so hard about only putting mayo, slivered onions, and shredded lettuce (where available) on my food without removing the stuff that makes it unique (like the BACON, people)?

Just call me The Drive-thru Pariah Queen from this day forward. Uhmmm-kay?

I've got the whine, Who's got the cheese?

Keats and Yeats

Today I visited Toronto and had the best day I've had in a while. Enjoyed the beauty of the U of T campus, at ice cream and listened to/made some sweet musical jams with an old friend. I ended up buying a pair of witchy boots and am kicking myself for not buying a pair of petticoat shorts (can you even imagine what that looks like?) while vintage shopping. To be honest, I wasn't very happy with my outfit today. Every time I go into the big city I feel pressured to look totally awesome, and then I end up picking something safe rather than creative. Oh well, floral leggings are still cool I guess?

Also, no one has put an offer on any of the items I have for sale so if you want to haggle then send me an email with your best offer (eloquentseriatim(at)hotmail(dot)com).

Guest Blog: Translating Life

Hello, Poop lovers! Gringation here. I hope you enjoyed my teaser post on Friday. Today, I'm guest blogging! I'm kinda nervous because this is a first for me. I'm an American girl living the life in Cancun, Mexico. You can check out my blog here:

http://gringationcancun.wordpress.com/

Right now, everything's going great in my life. I'm engaged. I (kinda) fit right into the Mexican culture. I'm used to the heat. Life is good. It wasn't always like this, though. I had to get used to a lot of things, some harder than others. The first hurdle I came across was the language.

When I first came to live in Cancun, I thought I had it all figured out. I spoke what I thought was fluent Spanish. (Seven years of Spanish in middle and high school is enough, right?) I had already been living as a missionary in Acapulco for 4 months. I was all set.

Obviously, I had no idea what I'd signed up for.

When I walked into my first day of college in Cancun, I had NO IDEA what was going on. The professors spoke so fast. If I ever got to the point where I understood what they were saying (generally), they would then ask me a question, and I'd have to ask them to repeat it. Multiple times. Talk about humiliation. I remember we had one teacher in particular who was hilarious. She would tell joke after joke after joke, and everyone would crack up laughing. Except me. Everyone looked forward to her class. Except me.

My Mexican classmates would always invite me to go out on weekends, and I'd go to bars, clubs, parties, etc. with them. This was torture. Everyone would be telling jokes, laughing, poking fun. I rarely understood what was being said. Speaking one-on-one in a second language is easy. The native-speaking person will slow down for you. They'll eliminate most slang terms and speak more formally. My high school Spanish was enough when it was just one person. When Mexicans are in a group, this is not the case.

Thank God for my classmates. I asked them about every phrase, every reference. And they never lost patience. (Or at least they never let on.) Over the next few years, I learned every joke. Every nuance. Every double meaning. Every celebrity. Every cultural reference. Did I feel like a complete idiot? All the time. But the end result was worth it.

Five years later, I work as a translator for a large travel agency. I'm great at translating words. Say anything to me in Spanish, and I'll find you the English equivalent… or at least the closest thing that exists. And vice versa. Many Mexicans can't tell I'm American by the way I speak. (Sometimes my whiteness gives it away, but that's another post.) Now, I've got it all figured out.

Kind of.

My thanks to Gringation for taking time to write for my blog today. In case you missed it, you should check out her teaser post on Friday, and if you needed more reasons to visit her blog, you really should. She's got a couple of the cutest Mexican poodles I've ever seen.

Something In The Way

That's right ladies and gents, it's been a while but I finally got a new haircut! Back when I had really short hair it would change style practically every other week, but I haven't actually visited the hairdresser in a good 8 months. Seriously. Anyways, I'm liking the new short bangs thing. This outfit isn't too interesting, just mixed the AA disco pants with a navy blue v-neck and unearthed these Clarks boots from my childhood closet at home. I wore them a lot before I got a pair of real Doc Martens, but now I wear them to work since Docs are off limits.

Lubbalubbalub

Like any family, we have our good days and our bad days. Lately, it's been more of "those days" than the good days, but we are going through teething hell. I say we, because it's BOTH of them. Jellybean, always ahead of the game, is cutting her 12 year molars, and Scooby, poor thing, is cutting his 2 year molars. I am very lucky right now to get 2 solid hours of sleep straight in a row. This means I am less than my best as well (and drowning myself in Sour Cream & Onion potato chips, this months insatiable craving).

When it's all said and done though, it's not hard to find reminders of why I love being a mom and wouldn't trade it for anything else in the world.

5. It's constant laughter.
4. Every day brings a new learning experience, especially from Scooby's perspective.
3. I can talk to myself in the car and not look like a crazed loser.
2. Hugs, lots and lots of hugs. And goodnight kisses.

But the number one reason I love being a mom?

"Lubbalubbablublala" in high crescendos and low basstones. Rinse, repeat. The sheer joy of flicking your tongue vertically from lip to lip as fast as you can while making lots and lots of noise songs without words. Then watching your 2.5 yr old mimic you, and falling on the floor together in a fit of giggles.

You just can't beat that.

What things remind you of why you love being a mom?
(Make sure you swing by on Monday and leave lots of love for my guest blogger!!)
