Romantic novels have earned themselves a special position in literature. As a result, they have an entire genre dedicated to them. Romantic books have been written in every language in the world. For most people the idea of love begins with the romantic novels. Their ideas for their partners are based on the descriptions written by the authors.
For many of us, the introduction to romantic books

Baby was a black sheep.
The breezy simplicity of crop tops paired with blue jeans has come to define my summer uniform as of late. It's too hot to put exacting thought into what I wear but the simple combination always seems to work. This outfit puts a certain kind of swagger in my step, I feel super confident and on top of the world in my lace crop top, ripped Levis and vintage brogues.
Just a thought: are high-waisted jeans still considered a 'trend'? I ditched my low-riders years ago, because they reminded me of the glitter bell-bottom flares of my adolescence. I think there's about one pair of low-waisted pants remaining in my wardrobe and I never wear them anymore because they feel weird.
I'm currently engrossed in the book Just Kids by Patti Smith. It was suggested to me by my best friend, and is hands down the best book I've read all year. It's beautifully written and it reads like a novel, except that it's real life! Patti was my absolute favourite back when I was in high school and her life stories are compelling, fascinating and inspiring. Total recommended reading.

Nelson, BC
We finally got out of the wilderness for a bit and spent the day hanging around Nelson, BC. It's a pretty small city but the downtown is this amazingly vibrant hippie haven. Someone should seriously start a "Nelson Street Style" blog and just take pictures of all the gnarly hippies wearing lace pants, tabi boots and ponchos. I tried and failed to fit in by wearing my ridiculous thrifted tie-dye long sleeve shirt but had lots of fun just soaking in the Nelson 'culture' by visiting the huge food co-op and eating at a vegetarian restaurant. I was so excited to see a wall painted with different musicals, especially my childhood favourite The Wizard of Oz and figured it was the perfect outfit photo-op!
My new favourite book.

Better Than Usual
Though I have long passed the age where it is requisite to buy a new backpack and pencil set, it's still fun to go "back to school" shopping. As of this week, I am the proud owner of Blundstone boots, which I am planning on wearing every single day until they fall apart (which is apparently never).
Always the sucker for nerdy organizational tools, I found these colourful post-it notes at the dollar store! Soon these textbooks will be covered in them. Luckily these textbooks actually seem remotely interesting, though their price was appalling as per usual.
Just trying to enjoy this whose "university" thing before its all over...

Last Week's Fact or Fiction
1. I just finished reading a book I hated called "If I Have a Wicked Stepmother, Where's My Prince".
FALSE. I LOVED this book. LOVED, LOVED it. There's a refreshing way of writing that just hooked me in and kept me hooked. It reminded me a lot of the Twilight series which I loved.
2. I am currently reading a book called "The Weight of Silence".
TRUE. Well it was. I have since finished reading it. It was an interesting read, though I felt disappointed. I feel like a key part to the story was left out, though the ending surprised me.
3. I found "The Princess Bride" abriged version to be boring.
TRUE. This is one instance where I found the movie much, much better then the book.

Hormone
Note the long sleeves and covered legs: it's finally September and autumn is here to stay!! I ordered these galaxy leggings from Black Milk ages ago, and finally received them after a sizing mix-up that was entirely my fault. They have really great customer service, the leggings are wicked and would highly recommend. Space seems to be all the rage in fashion these days, and it's easy to see why - they're beautiful and mysterious. I was inspired to buy this special edition of National Geographic while waiting for my beloved leggings, because space is fascinating.

Butter Pecan
I am seriously enjoying my week off in the country. Wisdom teeth recovery was (shockingly) quick and painless so I have been spending most of my time in a semi-horizontal state engaging in my favourite pastime...
READING! My literary taste ranges from the vaguely to obscenely Canadian.
Oh yeah, and I am kind of obsessed with my cat. She doesn't really have a name but sometimes I call her Killer. We're best friends and I enjoy repeating "Miu Miu" endlessly while in her presence.
Of course, I found the time to do some small-town thrifting. My favourite super secret thrift spot (St. Vincent de Paul's) was having a 50% off sale so I snagged a bunch of stuff for the grand total of $6.50. Tho total body count was a pair of heels, floral tapestry purse, sequin jacket and polka-dot dress.
I also picked up an old issue of Nylon, which is generally a horrid magazine, for 25 cents and found an article by my 90s bff Marisa Meltzer! Let's try to ignore the irony of an article on riot grrrl being used to hawk beauty products. The horror!

Last Week's Fact or Fiction
1. GC wants to go to Disney World, and while I always used to dream of going, the cost of the trip eats my insides away.
TRUE. While I would love to go, I can't fathom spending upwards of $2000 for the trip. At least not right now.
2. I am an online shopping freak.FALSE. There are some things I prefer to buy online, and I like the convenience of shopping from the comfort of my chair, but when it comes right down to it, I'd rather go to the store and view the item before purchasing, especially clothing.
TRUE. I took a defensive driving course, which here in the good old state of Virginia, adds "good" points to your driving record. I did in fact get a speeding ticket (not my first, but my first in many years) in April, in one of those inbetween zones going 51 in a 35 (shame shame, but the sign in front of me said 45!)

Honey Power
I generally never buy books because:
a) you can get them at the library for free
b) they take up a lot of space and I am a nomadic student renter
c) you can't wear them every day
But I do have a certain weakness for coffee table books filled with colourful fascinating pictures. While browsing around in Chapters, I found an intriguing book in the sale section (for $12.99!) called "Punk House: Interiors in Anarchy" by Abby Banks, which is kind of a stupid title but the editor's name compelled me to pick it up.
The book chronicles a number of "punk houses" in the US where people live communally on zero cash. The decorating in these places is haphazard (probably because of a high volume and turnover of occupants), but has the same elements of chaos and mess that make The Selby interiors beautiful - which proves to me that good taste is free. See what I mean?
A sampling of my favourite images, cover to cover. Just click on the photos to see them larger because details are key in all these photos! This book is definitely worth a look if you stumble upon it, and was certainly worth the buy for $12.99!

Fly a Train
I found the most life-defining (okay, maybe just wardrobe-defining) book at the public library last week! It's called Dr. Martens: The Story of an Icon by Martin Roach, and i can hardly believe I've never heard of this book before seeing as I wear Docs almost every day the temperature is right. In fact, I have 61 posts tagged as 'Doc Martens' as of this moment and most of them are my outfits. Oh right, quit bragging and back to the book.
It discusses the history of the Dr. Martens brand as well as a brief history of each decade in the 20th Century since the inception of the brand. It features a timeline of important world events in each decade, but the most interesting parts are the ones discussing Dr. Marten's relation to underground music subcultures. By the time I finish actually reading the book (not just browsing the pretty pictures), I'll have a huge list of bands to research.
Since the book coincided with the 40th anniversary of Dr. Martens, the brand commissioned British designers to re-envision what their ultimate Docs would look like. It was fascinating to see all the ideas!
Great book, great photos, can't wait to finish reading it!

Telephone
So I got another book in the mail. This time it happens to be 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls' and the cover art is so beautiful that I was inspired to create an outfit right away! The zombie girl on the cover is super creepy and wearing a white lace dress, so I decided to go with a granny dress and slip. Usually this outfit would be considered pretty and romantic, but today I was going for the 'demented anti-goth' look, if y'know what I mean?
I predict this will be an exceedingly entertaining read. Click here if you want to win the book!
