I thought this would be an easy one to write, but when you sit down and think about it, there aren't that many movies centered around birthdays...or that even have birthdays in them. However, since today is my birthday, it's time to pick out the best the business has to offer (in no particular order).
1) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
No, I didn't just pick this movie because Harry and I (magically) happen to have the same birthday. At the start of this film Harry is turning 11. On his 11th birthday he discovers he is a wizard and has his first birthday cake ever -- who could ask for a better celebration?
2) Sixteen Candles (1984)
Probably the only movie I could find that was completely centered around one birthday, but it's also a classic so bonus points! This one follows Molly Ringwald as her parents forget her birthday, she gives a nerd her underwear and finds the hunky man of her dreams. Plus there is a character named Long Duk Dong so you can't get much better than that.
3) Liar Liar (1997)
Jim Carrey plays a lawyer who is technically a nice guy, but who specializes in lying and disappointing his son Max. Max misses his Dad and makes a birthday wish that he can't lie for a whole day. And thus begins the hilarious movie that would be much funnier if it hadn't been replayed on TBS every weekend.
4) 13 Going on 30 (2004)
After bumping into some magic fairy dust and wishing she were "30, flirty and thriving," 13-year-old Jenna Rink wakes up as 30-year-old Jenna Rink (played by Jennifer Garner). She quickly learns that by taking some of the meaner paths in high school she has risen to a top editing job, but at a price. Overall, a heartwarming story about innocence and childhood love.
5) Peter Pan (1953)
Not technically a film about birthdays, but definitely a film about growing up. When Wendy Darling discovers she's spending her last night telling her brothers stories of Peter Pan in the nursery, the real Peter Pan comes to rescue her and her brothers and brings them to Neverland where they can never grow old.
