He bought me a soda and tried to molest me in the parking lot.

I am back home, alive and well after experiencing the surreal - the Pixies live in concert. This is what I wore to the concert - it's fuctional and weird, just like me. Pixies 'Sellout Tour' t-shirt I got on eBay, thrifted skirt, American Apparel leggings and sneakers.

The set was fantastic, mostly comprised of songs from Doolittle and Surfer Rosa (my favourites!) and I sang along and just generally freaked out the whole time. I was literally FRONT AND CENTRE and kept screaming "Kim, you're the best!" in between songs and waving at her. I could swear she smiled right at me and Anna! Kim was such a sweetheart, she kept thanking the crowd whereas Black Francis (or Charles Thompson, whatever he goes by these days) didn't even crack a smile. He didn't seem like a gracious guy, but he writes damn good music so I forgive him. It was hard to stand still long enough to take pictures, so this was the best I could do.

I also got to see Mates of State, Grizzly Bear, Paolo Nutini, Sloan, Ben Harper, Franz Ferdinand and LIGHTS (who was hysterically bad). I definitely enjoyed all the acts for the most part (sorry, Lights), but the Pixies were nothing short of epic. I can also assure you that Nosferatu, Gimli the dwarf from Lord of the Rings, Ron Weasley and Mr. Peanut are not fictional characters because I definitely saw each and every one of them lurking at the concert. My friend even got a picture of Gimli the security guard, but you're just going to have to trust me that the rest of them actually exist.

P.S. - Just to let you all know, I'll be an internet deadbeat for the next little while. I'm moving into my new apartment(!) and won't have internet there for a few weeks, so sorry if the updates/comments from me happen to slow down in volume.

In which I discuss life-defining music.

Earlier this week, Diane posted a musical retrospective of her school years and I had such a good time reading it that I decided to to steal her idea and do my own. So here I've listed all the bands and artist that have made a particularly powerful impression on me since the beginning of high school to right this moment. Music has always been extremely important to me - I grew up listening to and playing Classical music on the violin (I think my mom was hoping for the Mozart Effect) and even though my tastes have broadened, my love remains true!

In Grade 9, I suffered through an embarrassing pop-punk phase where I listened to Good Charlotte nonstop. Though I look back on those days with disdain, it was really a starting point. Rancid and NOFX were the first punk bands I ever really got into and they made a huge impression on me. I can't say I really listen to this stuff anymore, but it did lead me into other bands (like the Clash!) that I never stopped loving.
Rancid - Ruby Soho

NOFX - Pharmacist's Daughter

In Grade 10, I started to begin exploring the pop spectrum a little more. Beck's Guero album had just came out and it was one of the coolest things I'd ever heard at the time! The song 'Girl' is still exceptionally fun to dance and rock out to. Around the same time I met a boy who listened to music I'd never even heard of before. I don't talk to him anymore (admittedly, I was smitten at the time) but I'll always thank him for introducing me to Kate Bush.
Beck - Girl

Kate Bush - Cloudbusting

Grade 11 was a bizarre year for me, music-wise. It was around this time I started reading books about the history of punk music and was introduced to Patti Smith, whose music left an extreme impression on me. I can still listen to Horses and get the shivers every time. I also heard Le Tigre for the first time and their electro dance pop made me want to get up and move like never before. I still count Deceptacon among my favourite songs of all time! I also had a really weird industrial-goth phase in Grade 11 which involved a lot of Marilyn Manson, KMDFDM and Rammstein. Yeah, I was a weird kid.
Patti Smith - Horses

Le Tigre - Deceptacon

In Grade 12, I just remember listening to a lot of obscure British punk and post punk bands. I can't say any one specifically stuck out to me, but they certainly made a huge impression on me all together. I remember obsessively scouring used record stores for punk compilation discs with songs I hadn't heard on them before. I've chosen X-Ray Spex to represent all of these bands because this song is one of my favourites and the footage of Poly Styrene is great. The only singular artist that I truly loved at this time was David Bowie. This was a really turbulent time for me, and Ziggy Stardust definitely helped me recover from everything. Suffragette City is such a standout track and still one of my favourite songs.
X-Ray Spex - Oh Bondage Up Yours!

David Bowie - Suffragette City

After I graduated high school, I opted to take a "victory lap", which means I basically came back to high school for another year because I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life. It's actually pretty common to take a "victory lap" where I'm from, and even though it was an awful year (the work was not academically challenging at all) I don't regret it because I probably would've gone to a different University or picked the wrong program and not been half as happy as I am now. My favourite bands were (and pretty much still are) Minor Threat and Bikini Kill. The absolute energy and conviction of both bands absolutely knocked me off my feet, and to be honest, I am not yet standing.
Bikini Kill (I don't know the name of the song, but the footage is amazing)

Minor Threat- It Follows/ Screaming At A Wall

First year University had to be the best year of my life so far. Going to live in a different city away from home and meeting all new people was the best thing I ever did. I also started to listening to the Pixies and PJ Harvey nonstop. The Pixies are punk, but in a complex way I'd never heard before. I didn't like them when I first heard them in high school, but now I appreciate them all that much more. (Also significant, is that I'M GOING TO SEE THE PIXIES LIVE TOMORROW!) I've always had a deep love for intense female vocalists (most notably Kathleen Hanna and Courtney Love), and PJ's voice and music is so visceral that it has the power to rip me up and sew me back together all in the course of an album.
Pixies - River Euphrates

PJ Harvey - Long Snake Moan

Of course there are dozens of bands and artist who mean a lot to me but haven't been mentioned here. Believe me, it was hard to keep it to keep this bare minimum. I guess it's sort of feel right to be reflecting on the past few years as I'm moving into my first ever apartment next week! I've never lived completely on my own before (albeit I have wonderful roommates) and I'm ready to start this next exciting chapter of my life.

Lookin' like an erotic vulture...

True story: I've worn these Rag & Bone pants for three days in a row now. They're radically comfortable. Why can't all skinny pants live up to this precedent? This outfit is what I wore to work yesterday, it's a a little bit Rick Owens inspired. "Poor man's Rick Owens" if you will, since the vest is from Winners and the tank is H&M.

There's this crazy guy at work who always comments on the interesting "capes" I like to wear to work and made me promise to wear one before I left to go back to school (which happens to be tomorrow). I just love it when people who aren't into fashion can get stoked on something just because it's a little different, even if he did call my a vest a cape.

Fashion Faceoff: Gywneth Paltrow vs. Mischa Barton In Versace

A glittering minidress from Versace's spring 2009 collection recently turned up on Mischa Barton on the set of The Beautiful Life...six months after Gwyneth Paltrow wore it to the Grammy Awards. Decide who did it better, after the jump.

Here's Gwyn at the Grammys back in February, accessorizing her spangled strapless mini with a pair of shimmery tights, a sparkle clutch, a

Last Splash

Summer is almost over and I've been saving my money like a maniac (tuition is a bitch), but I wanted to reward myself with something nice before I had to go back to living on a student budget of broke. I am nowhere near rich, but I think it's a good idea to start buying 'investment pieces' whenever you can. So on the weekend, my friends and I drove up to north of Toronto to hit up Holt Renfrew Last Call, where all past season designer items are sold at marked down prices. After a long browse-through, only a few things really stuck out to me. The dressing room was the moment of truth - and the truth was, I really needed to buy this Balenciaga dress. The drape of the neckline is beyond perfect.

There it is - my first ever big ticket purchase! I love how it's very classy and womanly and professional but is simple enough to jazz up with brooches or weird leggings. Like this!

I also ended up with a pair of Rag & Bone pants, that I wore to work yesterday and are possible the most comfy things to ever envelope my legs.

And that, my friends, is the rest of the story.

Bleachers

Last friday was the annual summer BBQ at my workplace, and this year it happened to be "sports" themed. You all know how much I love dressing up in costume when the occasion call for it, but THIS was the best I could come up with.

Yep, high waisted shorts and a random thrifted San Jose Sharks shirt. PATHETIC, though I have to admit the t-shirt is pretty cool. A childhood full of ballet, music lessons and getting picked last in gym class will do that to you - there is not a single authentic sports-related item of clothing in my entire closet. I was never the tomboy. I am not at all sportif.

Jovovich Hitched

MILLA JOVOVICH has tied the knot. The 33-year-old model-turned-actress and fashion designer wed British film director Paul Anderson at an intimate ceremony with just 50 guests on Saturday in LA.

The bride wore a Temperley London gown - the long muse style - for the ceremony at which guests were entertained by Cuban musicians and enjoyed the delights of a round, four-tiered wedding cake,

I don't usually like pink, but...

Thanks be to Betsey Johnson, who has single-handedly reaffirmed my love for bizarre knitwear. Maybe my next knitting project can consist of weird shorts that look oddly like candy floss. I think I'm getting a sugar high just from looking at this picture. It is also hypnotizing me out of the deep, dark pit of hatred I've always had towards black lipstick.

I'm also harbouring an odd love for these patchwork jeans. Laura Ingalls Wilder would wear these if she listened to Mudhoney. They'd make a simple DIY, but I don't have any pants I want to experiment on.

Since we're on the topic of sequins...

From the moment I saw the documentary Paris is Burning* (in Womens Studies 101, no less), I knew I was a fabulous gay guy from NYC in the 80s trapped in the body of a petite Canadian female. Well, not really but it really affirmed my love for glitter + sequins and I am currently in the process of building up a collection of sequinned items.

For starters, this black sweater was thrifted. It didn't quite live up to my shiny expectations, so I cut up this trashy old belt and sewed it to the neckline!

This white sequin cardigan was a present from a friend who knows me all too well.

This blue drag queen top is one of my latest thrift finds. It's about ten sizes too big for me, but I knew if I didn't buy it then some eBay pirate would.

*Watch it on Youtube, you won't regret it.

Disco Stu

Oh sequins - the love of my life and bane of my existence.

Well, they're mostly the love of my life but some of the prices I see sequin jackets going for on eBay is just insane and kind of hurts my soul. I mean seriously, you found that jacket for $12 at a thrift store and now you're asking for $200? How the hell do you sleep at night?

He couldn't leave the finer life.

It must be the Scottish in me, 'cause Black Watch tartan seems to be working its way into my daily outfits something fierce. I used to wear the skirt above at least once a week last summer because I loved it so much. It hurts to think I've moved on because I still have feelings for it. Clothing really is a love affair.

I thrifted this black watch plaid shirt last week. It's soft as hell and makes me feel like a foxy lumberjack. It's a good feeling.

In other random life news, my Harry Potter kick is still going strong, I love Indian food more than I should and I'm going to see the Pixies at VFest. Once I see Kim Deal actually perform on stage (in the flesh) I will be able to die contentedly.

Personally, I find it a little silly to unequivocally hate something because there always seems to be an exception to the rule. I used to unequivocally hate leggings (mainly because people tended to wear them as pants) and now they're a staple in my wardrobe. I used to hate flip-flops, but now I have a pair that I never wear in public, but still...

World's Strangest Ice-Cream Flavors

Foie Gras and Caviar Ice Cream Japan is still the king of weird ice cream flavors, but France isn't far behind after gourmet ice cream maker Philippe Faur released the … foie gras and caviar ice cream! Candied Bacon Ice Cream Because everyone likes bacon and there's no reason to restrict its intake to breakfast, ice cream expert David Lebovitz experimented by making candied bacon ice cream.

I got a broken face.

The blistering heat that other bloggers have spent months complaining about already has finally reached my little corner of the world, and I've spent the past couple of days wearing as little clothing and drinking as much liquid as possible. I'm so thankful that it's only this hot for about a month each year - otherwise I would melt like the Wicked Witch of the West. So, does anyone remember a couple of years ago when these slipper/sandal/shoe thangs were the trendiest thing since sliced bread? They were about $2 a piece and came in every colour under the (too hot) sun. I found this red pair buried at the bottom of my shoe pile whilst trying to beat the heat and avoid wearing dreaded flip-flops. Even though the quality is nonexistent, I still find the sequin flowers and beaded leaves sort of charming. I'm going to wear these until they're broken, which shouldn't take too long.

You dirty switch, you're on again.

So, I saw Harry Potter in theatres again last night – I think my enthusiasm for the series is becoming borderline obsessive. This time, I was the annoying person in the theatre pointing out the discrepancies between the book and the movies. Oops, my bad.

I thought I’d try some clever yet subtle pattern mixing in this outfit, (flowers and hearts!) but the floral pattern on the shirt got kind of washed out by the picture. However, I promise you it’s lovely! I’ve had the Western-style belt since I was in my nine year old “horse crazy” phase and fancied myself an equestrienne. I was even in the official Ontario Appaloosa Club or whatever it’s called these days.

My Velouria

Hey, it's my day off - I figured I might as well dress outrageously as possible while I've got the chance! We had a ripping thunderstorm today and our power went out for a couple hours, so I shacked up with some blankets and read Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. The movie may have been epic, but nothing really compares to the books.

Gunk

I wore this outfit to work on Thursday - most of the outfits I wear on the weekend don't deserve their own outfit post. Which happens to remind me of how much I staunchly disagree with this Alexander Wang quote: "Anyone can get all dressed up and glamorous, but it is how people dress in their off days, that are the most intriguing." Honestly, If I thought you guys would be intrigued by sweatpants, then I'd be better off not writing a "fashion blog" now wouldn't I? Sure there are some people whose version of dressing down doesn't involve looking like crap, but I on the other hand would never feel compelled to dress well if I wasn't allowed an off day once in a while. Gimme a break, I'm a not a soulless fashion cyborg!

But that doesn't mean I don't appreciate shoes (et cetera) more than the average person. This particular pair was thrifted last summer, and I haven't found a better looking (or fitting) pair of vintage t-straps since!

TGIF! If there's anyone out there who is as excited as I am to finally sleep in after an exhausting work week, then raise your hands in the air! This weekend is going to be all about freash air and green pastures. Not to mention, the elusive practice of "sleep" is looking like sheer excellence to me right now. And speaking of sheer excellence, that sentiment can certainly applied to many things including the Worn Journal blog post about my adventures with Anna, wearing Minor Threat t-shirts to work and owning a skirt that cost you 50 cents and just happens too look like the badass new Pendleton for Opening Ceremony coats that are coming out this fall. Do you think it'd be going overboard if I wore them together? If only I could afford it!

Blown to hell, crash.

Wow, that was the most insane/bizarre/awkward weekend of my life. Sorry for the lack of posts, I think I needed some time to recover. But I did get to hang out with fellow adorable blogger Anna, who is super rad!

White, grey and a vintage Gucci monogram purse! I scored it off eBay, and its authenticity is dubious (the seller had 100% positive feedback and there is a serial number, but I did my research after receiving it in the mail and apparently there are a lot of fakes out there that look exactly like this one...) but I like how it looks so I'll wear it whether it's real or not - albeit, with a rather disappointed face.

From now on I'll stick to buying CDs and baggy t-shirts on eBay because shoes and designer bags are just too much of a gamble. I mean, you just never know!
