'Crazy Stupid Love' Review

I went into this film with high expectations and it didn't disappoint. That's not because it was what I had been expecting, but because it surprised me, made me laugh and even brought a tear to my eye at one point.

After watching the previews about a middle-aged and slightly stuck man (Steve Carrell) coping with his divorce by turning to a major lady's man (Ryan Gosling), I expected an upbeat comedy with various montages in which Gosling teaches Carrell how to dress and act. I envisioned a light hearted song playing in the background while Carrell comes out of the changing room wearing his underwear over his pants or something like that.

Instead, Gosling's visual transformation of Carrell took a total of two minutes and played a minimal role in the film's true theme. I was pleasantly surprised by how genuine the story of this broken family played out. Though some reviews have criticized the film's multiple story lines saying that the writers were going for a Love Actually theme and didn't pull through, I found each one to be endearing and well developed.

Carrell did a good job of not playing his usual role of the spazz. Yes, he was lonely and yes he was down on his luck, but he did it in a more realistic way than in some of his previous roles.

Basically the film shows the perfect example of false advertising. Yes it was crazy. And yes it was about love. But it definitely wasn't stupid.

Boring Outfit

Cut me a break, dudes.

Movie Review: Dig!

On a Tumblr recommendation from Kaye, I watched the Brian Jonestown Massacre/Dandy Warhols documentary Dig!, detailing the friendship, rivalry and fallout of the two bands. I have been a massive Dandy Warhols fan since high school so I jumped at the chance to watch a film about them but ended up getting totally sucked into the dark world of the Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Anton Newcombe of the BJM is a totally fucked-up weirdo who writes really good music and also dresses like a prophet.

Joel Gion is a hilarious man whose collection of bizarre sunglasses I totally envy.

Jeff Davies wears rad barrettes and I'm totally jealous of his hair.

...and of course, I would never leave out the magnificent Dandy Warhols!!

Zia McCabe is my spirit animal

Kelley Deal from the Breeders makes a cameo appearance!!

Dude, can I have that shirt??

Damn good stuff. Off to listen to Give It Back and Thank God for Mental Illness, over and out.

Actresses Deny 'Sex and the City' Prequel

Well this is just a never-ending parade of rumors and denial. After Blake Lively denied that she would play Carrie Bradshaw in a Sex and the City prequel, the British tabloid the Daily Mail claimed that Lively would instead play Samantha Jones while Elizabeth Olsen would play Carrie, Selena Gomez would play Charlotte and Emma Roberts would play Miranda.

However, since that report came out representatives of Lively, Roberts and Olsen have all denied the claim saying there is "no truth" in it. And Gomez's rep says that it's nothing more than a "rumor."

Sarah Jessica Parker herself has always been against a prequel film stating, "I don't think we can pretend to go back. It's creating two histories. It's like, 'Oh, I didn't know that about Carrie Bradshaw.' I'd definitely tell that [third] story, and I know Michael would do it right. But maybe not now. Maybe in five years, you know?"

I too think there should be a third film and that it should include the original cast members. I felt that the second film didn't include enough of the city — one of the main elements holding the series together. It was like High School Musical 2, if you will. Why would you set something called High School Musical, in the summer when high school isn't in session? Why would you set something called Sex and the City (indicating New York City), in Abu Dhabi?

What do you think? Prequel? Sequel? Or forget about it?

Top 5 Birthday Movies

I thought this would be an easy one to write, but when you sit down and think about it, there aren't that many movies centered around birthdays...or that even have birthdays in them. However, since today is my birthday, it's time to pick out the best the business has to offer (in no particular order).

1) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
No, I didn't just pick this movie because Harry and I (magically) happen to have the same birthday. At the start of this film Harry is turning 11. On his 11th birthday he discovers he is a wizard and has his first birthday cake ever -- who could ask for a better celebration?

2) Sixteen Candles (1984)
Probably the only movie I could find that was completely centered around one birthday, but it's also a classic so bonus points! This one follows Molly Ringwald as her parents forget her birthday, she gives a nerd her underwear and finds the hunky man of her dreams. Plus there is a character named Long Duk Dong so you can't get much better than that.

3) Liar Liar (1997)
Jim Carrey plays a lawyer who is technically a nice guy, but who specializes in lying and disappointing his son Max. Max misses his Dad and makes a birthday wish that he can't lie for a whole day. And thus begins the hilarious movie that would be much funnier if it hadn't been replayed on TBS every weekend.

4) 13 Going on 30 (2004)
After bumping into some magic fairy dust and wishing she were "30, flirty and thriving," 13-year-old Jenna Rink wakes up as 30-year-old Jenna Rink (played by Jennifer Garner). She quickly learns that by taking some of the meaner paths in high school she has risen to a top editing job, but at a price. Overall, a heartwarming story about innocence and childhood love.

5) Peter Pan (1953)
Not technically a film about birthdays, but definitely a film about growing up. When Wendy Darling discovers she's spending her last night telling her brothers stories of Peter Pan in the nursery, the real Peter Pan comes to rescue her and her brothers and brings them to Neverland where they can never grow old.

Storm Princess

...and continuing on with the "summer of not giving a shit," I quit my job. It kind of feels good, but would be better if I didn't have to find a new one. I think I want to dye my hair a dark blonde. Would that be weird?? It's something I've never done before so I'm itching to give it a try. Neophilia at its finest.

Also, I'm going crazy thinking of all the wicked outfits I would be putting together IF ONLY I had this pair of creepers. I'm desirous of anything with a thick platform sole, really.

'Avengers' Teaser Clip

Captain America is definitely on my list of films to see soon, but last night I saw Thor for the first time and started hunting for some Avengers clips. Here's one explaining the time jump between the WWII Captain America and the somewhat-modern day superheros. I'm really excited. I also hope they give Jeremy Renner his own film as Hawkeye.

Considering I have a strong dislike of Scarlett Johansson and almost every one of her roles, I don't think she needs her own film. I like how many of these comic book movies overlap like showing Renner briefly in Thor and Agent Coulson asking if the giant robot destroyer in Thor was "one of Stark's."

I'm really excited about this new film. It's set to come out May 4, 2012. Will you go see it?

Director Paul Feig Discusses 'Bridesmaids 2' Possibility

I really like the way he discusses approaching this sequel. Nothing is official or even in the works yet, but due to the film's success, it's only natural in these times (see Hangover & Transformers 2,3,4,90) that a sequel is considered.

After discussing the possibility of making a Bridget Jones's Diary 3 earlier this month, director Paul Feig is now talking about a Bridesmaids 2.

Here's what he had to say about the matter:
“There’s nothing officially in the works right now, but we’re all open to it in a way. We just have to figure out a way to make it right.” “The minute you make a movie that does very well, studios want to do another one. But speaking for all of us, we would only want to do it if we knew it would be as good or better than the first one. None of us want to just do the thing to make a lot of money and ruin the memory of the first one.”

“We have to have a real story that doesn’t have any moments where people say, okay, that’s fake or that’s dumb, or anything that puts people off. That’s always where too many comedies fall apart, there’s always some moment where, to get the joke across, they go to big or too broad.”

I think it could be funny if Kristen Wiig's character ends up marrying the cop, played by Chris O'Dowd and the girls get back together to celebrate that. I think there should be more back story between Rita and Becca, the two most opposite bridesmaids and there, of course, should be endless scenes with Melissa McCarthy who played Megan.

What do you think? Would you go see a Bridesmaids sequel?

Eli Roth's Movies to Be Turned Into Universal Studio's Ride

You may know him as the "Bear Jew" from Inglourious Basterds or the director of such horror flicks as both of the Hostel films, but now you can have your own hands-on Eli Roth experience. No, I'm not referring to that. The actor, director, writer and producer recently announced in Variety that scenes from his films will be turned into a ride at Universal Studios. Roth will design a maze based off several of his films for the amusement park's annual event Halloween Horror Nights.

It will be called "The Hostel: Hunting Season."

"Creating a maze for Halloween Horror Nights is a horror fan's dream come true," Roth said. "I've been visiting Halloween Horror Nights for years, and still remember the heart-pounding terror of going through the mazes for the first time."

And while the focus of the maze will clearly be the Hostel films, Roth says he will incorporate some "other surprises" as well. Personally I'm a big fan of his totally underrated film Cabin Fever. It's scary, it's gross and it's hilarious. I mean, any movie where one of the main characters loses about a pound of flesh shaving her legs in the bathroom gets an A+ in my book.

Universal Studio's Halloween Horror Nights runs from September 23 through October 31. Will you go? What's your favorite Eli Roth film?

'Sex and the City' Prequel Rumors...Lively Involved

Ok, so I've been against this idea from the start, but if it has to happen, I'm ok with this rumored cast. According to the Daily Mail, Elizabeth Olsen (sister to Mary Kate and Ashley) will play the young Carrie Bradshaw, Blake Lively will play Samantha Jones (after denying rumors about playing Carrie), Selena Gomez will play Charlotte York and Emma Roberts will play Miranda Hobbs.

This line up intrigues me enough to go see the film. It's supposed to follow Bradshaw when she first moves to the city and is loosely based off of the novel The Carrie Diaries. Olsen is more of what I envisioned as a young Bradshaw, though I've never seen her act. Hopefully, she'll have the same sass and quick wit Sarah Jessica Parker brought to the role. Selena Gomez looks a little more tan than I pictured the young, porcelain-skinned Charlotte, but she's stylish and likeable so I have no problem. It's hard to imagine Miranda Hobbs as being young, but Roberts might be able to pull it off. I liked her performance in It's Kind of a Funny Story and I think she's working hard to get out of the Nickelodeon hype. So we'll see if the British tabloid is accurate. No official statements have been made about the film yet, but with so many rumors, one of them might just be true.

What do you think? Is this a strong cast?

'Ides of March Trailer' Stars Gosling, Clooney, Hoffman and More

Ryan Gosling and George Clooney in the same movie? Plus Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Marissa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood? This movie literally appeals to almost every age demographic above 15. This political drama seems fairly interesting and talent-filled so hopefully it will pull through. Unless the trailer is deceptive, it seems that Ryan Gosling dabbles in some corrupt, dirty politics. His recent role in Blue Valentine and other roles in upcoming films have taken him far away from the romance genre and proven that he can be a serious actor. Hopefully this film will be just another step up his ladder of success.

Surprisingly, though he is the main politician, this movie doesn't seem to center around George Clooney. That might be a nice break from the last few films he's been in like The American and Up in the Air. And I guess directing the film and co-starring in it is enough for even Clooney. Philip Seymour Hoffman is barely in the trailer, but hopefully he'll play a pretty big part in the film. Ever the crook, Giamatti seems to be in his element with his deceptive character. It's set to come out Oct. 7. Will you go see it?
