Leonardo DiCaprio to potentially play main villain in Tarantino's 'Django Unchained'

With every new cast member announced, I'm getting more and more excited for Tarantino's latest spaghetti Western, Django Unchained. Though the film isn't set to come out until 2013 (Kill Bill Vl. 3 is set for 2014), I can't wait to see how it all comes together. Will Smith is currently in talks with Tarantino to play the leading role of the freed slave Django though Idris Elba (recently in Thor) has also been rumored for the role. Christoph Waltz has been confirmed for the role of Dr. Schultz, a German bounty hunter.

Apparently either Leonardo DiCaprio approached Tarantino or Tarantino approached Leo about playing Waltz's role in 2007's Inglourious Basterds. While I love Leo (and have since age 7), obviously Waltz was the better man for that role. But now there's a movie big enough for the two of them. DiCaprio is rumored as being in talks with Tarantino for the role of the main villain Calvin Candie. Candie is the plantation owner that Django escapes from, so you can understand how he might not be in the best of moods.

This won't be DiCaprio's first role as a villain. He confirmed earlier this year that he will be playing a serial killer in the film adaptation of Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City. Though the film isn't in production yet, I think DiCaprio will make an excellent killer. And now Tarantino is offering him the chance to be a racist "basterd."

While this report has not been confirmed yet, I hope that Tarantino will official sign Will Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio for these roles. Just throw Jack Black into some small, sidekick role and you have my dream cast (including the director).

What do you guys think? Can Leo play villain?
