Step aside Kathryn Bigelow, another woman is making film headlines these days. Jennifer Yuh Nelson (who has only directed twice) now has the highest grossing film with a female director. According to Entertainment Weekly, Nelson's Kung Fu Panda 2 has made $637.6 million worldwide. In second place now is Phyllida Lloyd's Mamma Mia! at $609.8 million worldwide. No offense to either of these movies (as I enjoyed both of them...yes, even Mamma Mia!), but this feels like a sign that female directors need to step their game up. Yes, box office numbers aren't everything in this industry, but they sure do help. Where is our Christina Nolan?
