Beautiful British Columbia

No Shooting!

This post is coming to you LIVE from 'Beautiful British Columbia', or so the license plates would leave you to believe. There's something a little...intoxicating about waking up facing a huge mountain covered in lush trees, because that's not something that ever happens in Ontario. Or should I say, 'Onterrible'? Anyways, I packed as light as possible which is really messing with my fashion game, but yesterday I wore my Black Flag shirt with tie-dye leggings and thrifted Keds knockoffs on a brief morning walk, where we encountered this genius 'No Shooting' rock.

Just an example of the scenery...

Got yr boyfriend feelin' like a groupie.

For what can only be explained as biological reasons, I've been feeling the urge to dress up like its Spring even though the presence of snow suggests that it is clearly still WINTER for all intents and purposes. (Blame Canada!) I just want to bum around in colourful tie-dye and too-tight jeans in the most perfect shade of sugar Peeps yellow. The delightful presence of pastel colours has even coaxed my bellybutton out of hiding!
Speaking of sugar Peeps and candy in general, I just realized that the Hershey's Kisses I've been eating match this outfit perfectly.
Oh! And a friendly reminder to all the Earth-conscious out there to participate in Earth Hour by turning off your lights and appliances at 8:30pm, regardless of time zone. I'll be celebrating Earth Hour by participating in candlelight yoga. If you can't think of anything to do then just take a nap! Or start drinking, it is Saturday night after all.

Thrill of It

This post is alternately titled: "What I Wore To Go See Black Swan In Theatres for the Second Time." Classic granny floral button-down shirt. funky granny sequin cardigan and a more age-appropriate knit pencil skirt. Holy crap, looking at these pictures makes me realize how badly I need to clean my room.

In other exciting news, check out the amaaaazing Morrissey tie-dye shirt that Marlena hand screen-printed for me! She is the unequivocal master of do-it-yourself. I never thought tie-dye could be better than it already is, but then you slap a Morrissey graphic on it and everything becomes so much better!

90s Drew Barrymore is clearly my tie-dye soul sister alter ego.

Marlena also made me a fantastic lavender peter pan collar with its own Courtney Love hanger!! I would wear it but it looks too perfect just casually decorating my wall, y'know? Thanks so much, lady!

I also bought a cheapie Hole necklace off eBay to cement my Courtney groupie-dom... Yay!

Dreary One

It was super awkward taking outfit photos this morning, because my landlord and a bunch of construction workers were working directly beside the garage. Explaining to people that you take pictures of your clothes every day is more than a little weird. In better news, I spent the August long weekend at my friend's cottage and accomplished a favourable amount of swimming, boating, book reading and beer drinking. What a happy bunch!

Just finished reading Killing Yourself To Live by Chuck Klosterman, and he is now officially my favourite author. I've already read Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs. Can anyone reccommend some similarly interesting books that critique pop culture with a witty, unique voice?

Genie Master

Last week my friend went to a tie-dye party (I am not making this up, these sort of events seem to happen rather often within me social circle), so I gave her a pair of white leggings so she could her worst! I am insanely pleased with the results of this colourful experiment. I am not giving up. 2010 is officially the summer of tie-dye!

P.S. - This picture made me realize how crazy long my hair has grown! Remember when it was a pixie cut? Yeah, me neither.

Shake, Rattle & Roll

Do you ever feel creatively stifled when you can’t wear EXACTLY what you want? Usually I love a challenge, like taking something ugly and incorporating it into an interesting outfit but when you have to dress a certain way almost every single day I almost want to give up! Last summer, I worked an office job and I had to dress ‘business casual’. Sometimes I managed to come up with cool outfits, but most of the time it was subtle variations on button-down shirts and black pants. The problem is, it didn’t feel like ‘me’. Now that I have to dress myself entirely in one brand for work, it’s even more difficult to inject bits of my personality into daily outfits. I bought this scarf in hopes that weird tie-dye will jazz up my outfits a bit more, and inspire me back into the blogworld.

Speaking of blogworld, last Friday I attended the Worn Fashion Journal Issue 10 launch party! It was a ridiculously excellent time just jivin’ on the dance floor to all the 60s music, as well as meeting so many familiar faces (Hi Anna, Hannah, Kevin and Stephanie!!) I wish there was a good picture of my outfit but I look like a crazed swamp creature in every single one.

Still an Animal

It's a little terrifying that I'm finding outfit inspiration from one of the creatures on 'People of Walmart', but I really want to be wearing tie-dye and floral shorts right now.

All the money in the world is not enough

As a hippie at heart and sometimes in appearance, it is only natural that I have a deep affinity for tie-dye. After years of admiring tie-dye t-shirts at craft fairs, the first tie-dye piece I ever bought was this bright rainbow spiral longsleeve shirt at Value Village. Admittedly, I found it in the men’s section but it fits pretty well for a shirt whose tag reads “Beefy-T”.

I had always wanted to try my hand at the DIY tie-dye process, so I bought a kit and experimented on my (expendable) frosh t-shirts. As you can see, the result was endearing but amateur.

When my friend invited my to a free tie-dye workshop I jumped at the chance, but later had to bail out to do homework. She ended up making a shirt for me even though I couldn’t attend the workshop and the result is pretty badass if I do say so myself! I am proudly wearing my new expertly hand tie-dyed t-shirt today, if only to sit in the library and write a paper.

You're Standing on My Neck

Yet another bizarre sweater has entered the realm of my charmed closet! It happens to be a massive tiger sweatshirt and it is going to do battle with the Phoenix in order to prove itself worthy. Unfortunately, I am only borrowing it from my favourite d00d and I will have to give it back eventually but until then I am basking in its warm, comfortable glory.

My choice of footwear was definitely influenced by watching old episodes of Daria.

Stare into the hand-painted eyes of doom.

The man, the sweater.

Pink Panther

Its not Valentine's Day yet, but I felt like dressing up for it anyways. These knee socks are new and I just really wanted an excuse to wear them! For some reason, I've accumulated an obscene amount of buttons that I never wear. I just picked out all the pink ones (boots, vagina, tyrannicide! - what a weird combination) and stuck them on my dress to make the outfit appear more "quirky" and "interesting".

I really like my legs today.

Prejudice won't keep you warm tonight.

I wore my shiny Thursday best to go see a late showing of Youth in Revolt last night. Seriously, I don't care if Michael Cera is the Keanu Reeves of awkward teen films - he always manages to charm the pants off me! It wasn't an amazing movie but it did have its moments. "I want to tickle your bellybutton from the inside!" My sense of humour is seriously skewed.

PS - Does anyone want to discuss how utterly revolting this "Why I Hate Fashion" article is?

See the luck I've had...

I was staring at my closet last night, trying to find inspiration but this was the only outfit I could think of. But to be honest, it is definitely my favourite outfit that I've worn in a while! The sweater is Rodarte-inspired, the skirt is a little bit Luella-inspired and the rest of it is just a hodgepodge of textures and prints. Tie dye! Woolly socks! Lions! Tigers! Bears! Oh my!

Oh, not to mention that the topknot hairdo remains in full force. I may not be an effortless Scandinavian beauty, but I sure can try real hard to look like one.

Safe and Warm

I am finally through with my hellish bout of exams, and am safely tucked away in the backwoods of rural Ontario to spend Christmas with the family. Its really nice to be here, even though there isn’t much to do. Since being home I have:
1. Cut up a multitude of magazines
2. Decorated two different Christmas
3. Visited the Shetland sheep across the road
4. Heard enough Christmas Carols to make me go absolutely insane

I must go find some errant wool to knit another sweater (like this one I’m wearing) before I die of boredom.

Sometimes Always

Today is a pretty crap day, which suits me fine because I have to stay inside working on a paper all day anyways. I really love this Lolita meets Wednesday Addams dress that I bought in Toronto with Mary - it doesn't get nearly the wear it deserves. Same with these wicked tie-dye leggings. I guess that's what compulsive shopping does to you. I have zero closet space left but that does nothing to stop my drive to acquire cheap and cheerful garments. In other news, I found this random free mp3 website where I downloaded a shitload of Jesus and Mary Chain and Millions of Dead Cops. I've basically been listening to that nonstop lately and it is excellent.

Where have you been?

Today was eventful in the sense that I didn't do anything at all. I took a nap even though I never take naps because I was having trouble dealing with the exhaustion of doing nothing at all. Actually, I tried doing my ecology readings but that didn't work out so well. HEY LEAVE ME ALONE, AT LEAST I WORE SEQUINS.

The end.

Raspberry Jam

On Saturday morning, I managed to drag myself out of bed really early so I could help my best friend with her garage sale. Running a garage sale is a lot of fun, but it's so much work! We were both completely exhausted by noonhour. But the best part of it all, was I got to keep a few things she had put out for sale for myself! I snagged the awesome asymmetrical ruffled tunic that I'm wearing today with tie-dye leggings along with a cute hat and some premium magazines. Yes, free stuff is definitely the best kind of stuff.

Seychelles, Mauritius

Since returning home, I've picked up where I left off in terms of one of my hobbies: thrifting. Being something of a compulsive shopper with a closet that is stuffed to the brim, I always seem to find things I absolutely cannot live without. Today it happened to be a black tie-dye longsleeve, a tiny floral grunge dress, leather boots and an amazing royal blue band jacket/cardigan. Well, its really a cardigan with band jacket-style detailing on it. My mom said it was "obviously made in the Michael Jackson era." How can I argue?

Modeling my new thrift finds!

Snuffy

Today, I am a tie-dye menace. This shirt rules, no matter what...

I'd like to thank all you well-wishers! After sleeping for 12.5 hours last night, I'm feeling slightly better but I might need another sleep of Rip van Winkle proportions in order to shake this darn illness. But first, I must tackle the monster that is Statistics class, and catch up on job-hunting/readings my for Environment and Development class. Cheers!

No Resolutions, Just Awesome.

I hope everyone had an excellent and memorable New Years night. Here's to a prosperous 2009! My night was a mini version of a high-school reunion party, except less awkward because we all good friends who haven't seen each other in a while. Real party pictures have yet to surface on the internet, so here's a haphazard and slightly disturbing close-up I took before stepping out the door. I was trying to go for vintage glamour with the red lipstick and all, lord knows if I succeeded.

Of course, New Years Day was spent mainly in 'recovery mode' but I dragged myself out of bed to do a little playing around with the tripod I got for my birthday. Today's outfit was definitely comfort based, just black leggings and my trusty phoenix sweater that is basically a dress.

In a previous post, someone wondered how I was going to style the tie-dye shirt I got. Here is my visual reply.

A lot of people see tie-dye as this big fashion mistake, but I just love it. I'm not a hippie, I swear!

P.S. -Did anyone else love Google's '2009' image? It makes me smile.
