'Carrie' Remake in the Works...what does King think?

Though I was always secretly a bigger fan of The Rage: Carrie 2, in which an extended relative of Carrie wreaked vengeance on some moronic, redneck football players, I suppose most can agree that the original Carrie was a classic. The original movie that came out in 1976 and was directed by Brian de Palma is still revered by film critics and horror buffs alike.

So why make a new one? Writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who works with comics books and has written some episodes of the TV series Glee, has been hired to script a remake of this prom horror flick. Stephen King, the author of the original novel, had some thoughts on the matter when he spoke with Entertainment Weekly:

"The real question is why, when the original was so good? I mean, not Casablanca, or anything, but a really good horror-suspense film, much better than the book. Piper Laurie really got her teeth into the bad-mom thing. Although Lindsay Lohan as Carrie White… hmmm. It would certainly be fun to cast. I guess I could get behind it if they turned the project over to one of the Davids: Lynch or Cronenberg.”

But there's no news of any such development. While EW seemed unsure, Total Film said that Aguirre-Sacasa had definitely been hired and that the remake intends to be closer to King's original novel. What do you guys think? Necessary?
